A mighty fine establishment! Boy, does Union Rec know how to do it nice. My go to the past few times has been the 1/2 pound of brisket, get some fries, and a side of the union mac, you'll see God. I went during a high volume time, so there was a tiny wait for my drinks, but it was so worth it. I'm always floored by the ambiance of the restaurant, it's so camp. Finally, I just had to pull two of the managers aside, Victoria and Makayla, no problems with our service or food, but I just had to know where they got their outfits! I just wanna put them in my pocket! Finely fitted women they are, glad I've finally found in a place where I can not only be full for a reasonable price, but I can step out in style per the advice of my new besties.
What a fun and delicious spot! We came for lunch and the portions are huge - honestly 2 tacos each was too much, but we scarfed them down. The pollo asado, Korean pulled pork, and brisket tacos were all literally overflowing and so fresh tasting. Accommodating for gluten allergies, but you need to be careful bc sometimes that are marked gf* are fried in same oil as gluten items, so if you are celiac you cannot have these items.
We were there Saturday, Jan 11th, 2025 @ 5:30 pm & had no wait for a table. If going @ a later time, then you may want to get reservations. Food was really good. There were 4 of us & we had the Union Rec Chips & Salsa appetizer. Of the 3 dips, they were all really good, the Peruvian salsa does have a kick to it (about 30 secs after putting it on your mouth), but it was still tasty & not overpowering. We ran out of the chips & the staff brought us more without asking. I had the Union Rec Burrito with the pork bbq meat. It was huge & very delicious. My husband had one of the Birria Beef Ramen bowl. Also it was a huge, filling & tasty. The atmosphere was really cool as well & not loud as some restaurants can be. We could easily talk to each other without talking really loud. The only issue was parking, we had no problem at 5:30 pm, but when we left @ 7 pm, cars were waiting for people to leave. It was kind of nuts getting out of the parking lot.
This was a good place to visit for lunch. The seating was a comfy booth and it was not crowded. The food was tasty. There were a couple of vegan items on the menu. I had the lunch bowl made vegan and it was delicious. There were also sauce items on the table which were nice to have.
Came here for the first time before heading to a show. First off- I highly recommend reservations. They were on a wait by 5:00 (on a Saturday). It is truly an eclectic place- food and the vibe. They do have large tables that could accommodate 6-8 people, so if you have a larger group this is definitely an option. I hear they have seating outside but it was cold, so we were in. Our server was amazing and the food delivery was timed well. The food is tacos meets bbq meets Korean. If you can't find something here, you are the problem! We had the guac (avocado and English peas... super good), mac & cheese with pulled pork, and the Korean rice bowl. It was all delicious. They also had some fun holiday drinks. We will definitely be back.
Went in the middle of a UMich game and it was crowded and we were able to watch the game! The tacos were amazing and worth the price. The mac & cheese was runny at first which isn't my favorite type. it thickened up as it set but then got cold and wasn't flavorful. That's the only reason i docked a star. Everything else was amazing including the staff and funky interior.
Had a great meal and experience at the Union Rec on South Main Street during Saturday's game day! (Go blue!) My friends and I were unsure how busy places would be, so we had made a reservation prior to arriving. However, there seemed to be plenty of open seats and space for people just walking in without a reservation. There were plenty of TV's to watch the game, and the atmosphere inside was very cozy and fun! Our server was attentive the entire time we were there watching the game. I tried out the seasonal, raspberry-lime margarita and the Korean Pulled Pork stack. So good! My margarita was sweet, but not too sweet. I think my tajin rim was a good addition to balance the flavors. And my sandwich was full of flavor, the meat was well-seasoned, and I felt extremely satisfied and full after a day of tailgating. Overall, not the busiest place to watch the football game but had a nice experience and a solid meal!
I've now been to Union Rec a few times and I'll say the food has progressively gotten better with each visit. The Bandeja Bowl is full of flavor and the tteokbokki on the happy hour menu is tasty too! The one time I sat at the bar the service was lacking, but table service has always been good. I will say the parking is never easy, especially if you go during peak dinner time. I have had to circle the lot a few times.
Did carryout from here a couple of weeks ago and overall it was a very smooth process with very tasty results. I ordered from their website from my phone on my way home from another engagement and was told it would be about 20-25 minutes which was around how long it took me to get there. Pick up process was a breeze. They had plenty of parking outside (alongside a very cute outdoor patio, btw). I was sent a code to enter into these little storage lockers they have in the front that held our bagged up order. A quick in and out! I got the nachos with brisket added and my husband went with the Korean brisket rice bowl. For dessert we each got the s'mores brownie pot pie. The nachos were a huge portion and I was able to get two meals out of them (reheated in our toaster oven to help keep things a bit crisper but I did end up having to add a few fresh chips from our snack stash to get a better crunch). The brisket on both the nachos and the rice bowl was also very good. And the dessert? Oh man. The ganache topping in particular was SO good. I wish I could buy a jar of it for home. In the end the price was a bit steep so even though we both really liked our choice I'm not sure we'd be adding them into our regular rotation for carryout. But I'd definitely be more than happy to go back for a full meal, or maybe even just grab a dessert. I'm intrigued by their coffee bar as well and plan to check that out soon, too.
Stopped in for lunch with a friend around 12:30 in a Sunday. I was shocked how quiet and not busy they were. We were seated right away and immediately noticed the bright and playful decor. The ambiance is as if urban outfitters and anthropology opened a restaurant. It was cute, eclectic and quirky. The service was excellent, given, it wasn't too busy. We started off with the sweet pea guacamole, which was delicious! The mashed peas really made the texture extra creamy. The mcgregor declawed cocktail (mocktail) was refreshing and I am always a fan when there is a proper mocktail menu. It's just nice to order a drink without having to alter something off the alcoholic drink menu. I ordered the bandejo bowl and it was the perfect blend of flavors! There were a few menu options for vegan and/or dairy free and it was hard to decide, I want to go back to try more of the menu. I also appreciated this restaurant has its own parking lot so it is accessible for everyone and getting there is easy, no hassle of street parking or walking from a further lot.
